96 3/4 454 bouncing at 40mph

Hello all,

I have a terrible bounce & wobble in the driver’s front tire. I took the truck into Big O Tire and they replaced 2 steering bars not sure which ones, they weren't tie rods. They said the tie rods were ok. It cost me $600. It was fixed for about 4 months, than the problem resurfaced. The truck only has this problem at around 40 mph than goes away around 55 mph, weird I think. I put a new Monroe shock on the driver’s front side to see if it would fix it but no dice.

I do need new tires on this truck, could that be a culprit. I don't want to start dumping money into this truck if I am not sure what it is. I guess I might need to take it to a dealer and pay the $80 bucks for an estimate, than I could try and fix it myself from what they say.

What does the steering shock do, could this be the culprit?

Hell could it be just a tire balance weight thingy they put on the tires rim?

I will rotate the tires and check the tire pressure to see if it fixes the problem.

I only drive this truck pulling the ski boat or the snowmobiles, it’s a gas hog.

Anyway any help would be great.

I think you are on the right track with tires and the steering damper.

New tires will fix the problem. If you want to test this theory then rotate the front tires to the back, this should move the bounce to the rear.

what they said ^^^ sounds like a broken steel belt in the tire. Sometimes it hard to see on the truck but once you take it off and put it on a wheel balancing machine you should see the wobble. But yeah move the tires front to back and see if that works.

i have the same problem at 45mph in my 98. i thought it was a balancing\tie rod problem so i had them checked out. the tire guys did some test and they said the rim was bent and wobblin like crazy. they put the bad rim on the one of the back tires and i havnt had the problem sence

hello all,

I finially got around to rotating the tires on the passenger side. I needed to buy an 8lb big hammer to get the back wheels off, damn was that tuff. Anyway I found out that the front passenger tire was the bad tire, it was making the whole front end shake and the front driver’s side to wobble. I have rotated the front tires to the back and it has fixed the problem for now. I will need to get 4 new tires A.S.A.P.
