Whats Limp Mode how's it work

http://waw.wardsauto.com/ar/auto_general_motors_corp_3

And the amazing and now-legendary "limp home" feature that allows this all-aluminum engine to operate without any coolant without fear of meltdown.

Whats Limp mode and has anyone experienced it, how does it work?

Re: Whats Limp Mode how's it work

Limp mode utilizes the ECM to cut ignition and fuel to individual cylinders, allowing those inactive cylinders to function as a gigantic "air pump", the air volume in the cylinders is then used as a temporary "coolant" to keep the cylinder block from melting. I had it happen to me in a Camaro with the 3.8 V6, after an accident ruptured the radiator. I was able to make it 10 miles home, with no coolant at all, the engine basically just shuts down as you approach the high limits of engine temperature, then allows the engine to run after the block cools, again and again! I believe that the engine shut down about 4 times in 10 miles, but I made it home with no lasting damage from the coolant loss. It can be a real time/lifesaver! (However, I wouldn't want to drive the car too far, it can be somewhat frustrating when it shuts down...)

Good thing you didn't lose any trans fluid or forget it I didn't know any 3.8's had this feature, must be the 200hp 95-02 camaro. My car is a 2000 intrigue gx 3.5, My car almost overheated until it accelerated faster and shut off if when needed to the thermostat was frozen in the winter and I got no heat but it eventually thawed my temp guage went to the 3/4 mark any higher i'd shut it off or speed up throwing down cold air it was 15 degrees or less. I noticed the red light on the bottom of the temp guage at which mark did yours kick in.
