rear shocks

Question: While swapping old shocks for new I broke off the upper stud from the frame rail. Not the stud for the upper shock eyelet but the support plate. So right now the support plate is held in place by the upper shock stud and the bolt which is rearward from the broken stud. The support plate does not look like it has moved or twisted since I put it back together. That said, I looked inside the van for the backside of the stud in hopes that I can drive it out and install a new one. no such luck. The seatbelt bolt which is 2" away is the only fastener visible. The stud must be welded in place. Can this be fixed or does it matter? From the looks of it, it does not bear any load from the shock absorber.

Can you center punch the stud and drill it out then use a nut and bolt?

I don't know how stiff or supportive the sheet metal is. I'll have to take another look at it.

So after a few days with the broken stud it was clear the plate was flexing. I went ahead with your suggestion and drilled it out. I used a stainless steel 1/4" bolt and sealed it with silicone to stop any water and rust into the inner body panel. That should finish the job.

I'm bringing this topic back to life. I orginally installed Monroe Sensa-trac shocks on the rear of the Villager in 2008. The oil has already leaked from them and at 65+mph the back end vibrates something fierce. Thankfully they offer a lifetime warranty. However, I am replacing them with KYB GR-2 shocks this time. Admittedly, I'm disappointed that the Monroes only lasted 3 years. This time I want just a simple quality shock.

Does anyone have any experience with KYB shocks? These are the silver standard version.

dont have any experience with the kyb's but heard about them no problems
hows the plate holing up??1/4 bolt??was that about the same
as what you drilled out??

Yes, I was able to drill out the broken bolt and replaced it with a SS bolt from inside. Its strong as ever.

I have not installed the kyb, but have heard alot of good from members on another forum that installed kyb struts and shocks.
