fans wont shut off

For some reason my fans wont shut off on my 98 t&c unless i pull my fuse, just started happening. could it be my temp sensor? I cant see my relays going bad on both of them.

Based on several recent posts it's usually caused by the single solid state relay that controls both fans. It's called the cooling fan relay and it's mounted on the frame next to the radiator down low on the driver's side. They cost around $50.

Re: fans wont shut off

i replaced mine recently when it went the other way, and PREVENTED the fans from coming on.

Doubling up my problem was that when the first one went out, it also burned the connnector, which is also a common problem, apparently. I got that part at the dealer

Just in case you pull it off, and see burn marks...here's the part number (I have a 98 Gr Voyager, and assuming it's the same part)

5013979, and my price was $26.36. Again, this was for the connector. The relay you can get at any Auto Parts place.

Re: fans wont shut off

Thanks! I didn't know if it was a connector to the fan motors.

What a PITA location for the relay! Went at it from the bottom and lost some skin off my wrists and fingers but finally got it out. Wires were fine so just needed the $50 relay. Works fine now.

This site rocks! (and saves me lots of $)

Re: fans wont shut off

From what I've read, you did it the hard way. Most go from above. The main thing is you fixed it. I should say, you fixed it and kept a bunch o bucks in your wallet in the process. Great job!

Re: fans wont shut off

DO NOT replace that fan realy with a standard relay, your computer will flip out! Purchase the relay from the dealer!
My connector burned out but I was able to get a connector/relay from a salvage yard.

Re: fans wont shut off

Apparently the ECM monitors the fan relay. When my relay failed the ECM threw en error & the check engine light came on. I did a code read & that's when I relized that the fan relay was the culprite.

If you replace the fan relay with a standard relay the ECM will not understand what's going on & will continually throw error codes.

Re: fans wont shut off

On my van, only the "Service Needed Soon" light came on and it turned off when I replaced relay with the cheap one.

Re: fans wont shut off

What are you referring to when you state "The cheap one"??? Is it a plug & play reley (replaces OEM) or did you replace the whole plug/relay with a standard relay???
