99 Suburban - No Reverse

After pulling onto my street this evening after an hour on the beltway, I noticed the RPM's racing and my gear not shifting out of first. I let off the gas pedal and it shifted to second. I parked and turned off the truck for 10 minutes. I started the truck back up and shifted into Reverse - and I coasted forward. What should I be looking at from a repair standpoint? And is it safe to drive 2 miles to the shop?

Re: 99 Suburban - No Reverse

check trans fluid and filter. i'm guessing you'll find your answer there.
i had same problem. trans rebuild after only 77K.
i figured truck tranny should be a bit more reliable. oh well.

Re: 99 Suburban - No Reverse

Sounds like a broken Sun Shell (no 2nd, 4th and Reverse). Most likely, when you let off the gas, it shifted into 3rd.

Re: 99 Suburban - No Reverse

I agree also, broken sunshell and it is a very common problem. The aftermarket hardened ones do break also and I know a transmission shop that has seen that happen. Also have this done,5 black springs in the direct clutch drum and there is one thing to do with them: THROW THEM AWAY!GM says to put them back in and the aftermarket says to throw them away. The aftermarket is right and GM is wrong. Those 5 black springs restrict the clutches from floating easy, burns one clutch out and the rest are toast later on.
