1998 Saturn SL2 has high idle?

I don't know if this is a high idle since this is my first time owning a saturn. Upon start up it idles between 1200RPMS and 1500RPMS this seems pretty high compared to any other car I have owned before. If it is a higher then normal idle for this type of car what would be most likely causing the engine to idle this high?

1998 Saturn SL2, 1.9 engine,Automatic.

Any help will be appreciated.

You say it idles like that at start-up. Does it come down after a couple minutes? Idle should be about 800-900.

+1^^^^^

Initial idle should be aroun 1200rpms. after a few minutes idle should come down to 800-900 rpms. If it does not then do the following:

Replace the ECTS. Brass ones from the dealer are the best i think.
Clean your throttle body. Take it off and clean all the passages of carbon.

Good luck!

The suggestions already received are well worth trying.

I have a 2000 SL 1.9L sohc that also developed high idle speed at about 145k miles. However, it also had reduced mpg and an occasional cylinder misfire code.

Once I had gone thru the less expensive remedies, forum members correctly diagnosed the problems as an exhaust manifold gasket leak.

I have received good service from my SL.

Good luck.
