Well iv been lookin for a caprice for a while and couldnt seem to get a hold of one till now.
Factory 350 engine psi, temp, and volt gages on passenger dash etc Its a 89 chevy caprice old Detective car I was told. Good body a littke rust around wheel wheel but not through. It needs one brake line and when at idle in drive.Liek when your at a stop light it kinda chugs like its trying to jump forward not like it wants to cut off But like it wants to take off possible carb issue? Any suggestions? Thanks I dont know much about caprices and i know this is the place to come. |

Re: I just got a caprice
If no ones going to answer your question then i guess i will! I think i've also been having this "chugging" issue you speak of. My car is currently in the shop because i gave up on it. My first recommendation would be to check your vacuum lines. You may need a carb rebuild but i'd wait on that because that may cost some real $$$. So that was my 2 cents worth. And oh yeah, welcome to the caprice forums!

Re: I just got a caprice
1989, no carb. Engine uses throttle body injection. Definitely check the state of the vacuum lines. These cars use the MAP (manifold absolute pressure - tech speak for vacuum) sensor for the EFI system, not a mass airflow or MAF sensor. If there's a vacuum leak on an EFI car with the MAP system, this could result in 'surging' at idle as the computer will misinterpret the vacuum leak as slightly open throttle, pulsing the injectors to compensate. You may see a 'service eng. soon' light as well, as the computer will likely be confused with the vacuum reading from the MAP weighed against the data from the throttle position sensor.

Re: I just got a caprice
no carb? Ok well someone told me it could be the egr. I have went over a few hoses but i will do a more through check and see if anything is disconnected, maybe use some seafoam also.

Re: I just got a caprice
EGR is another possibility, but the cost of a replacement is such that it's best to check the vacuum lines first. An Autozone replacement valve is $52.99 and that's CHEAP.

Re: I just got a caprice
Well i found two things
first the canister on the drivers side is missing a hose and its plug i found a lose wire in lome(plastic) that has the plug torn off which looks like it plugged into the canister. I didnt see any lonely hose around to plug into whatever sensor thats on top Secondly, The hose going to the egr was not connected but the hose had a piece of pastic put into it. So i know that it was done on purpose. I removed the plastic and plugged thehose back up.now the car seems to run worse possibly plugged the hose becasue the egr is bad? |
