Check Engine Light Issue

I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid that has a check engine light on, and the error codes I am getting are P0700, and P1776 indicating trouble with the transmission. She has an issue with starting slow, and when I come to a stop ocassionally the transmission jolts a bit a when I get back going she doesn't shift back up and I will be going 45 mph with the rpm above 3 when it is normally between 1 and 2. It tells me either their is internal trouble with the transmission or a failed pressure sensor. Anyone that could give some adivce???

Code P0700 = Transmission Control System (Mil Request)
Code P1776= Solenoid Switch Valve latched in the LR position

Which Engine? Mileage?
When was the transmission filter and fluid changed? ATF+4 ONLY

Sounds like it is going into Limp Mode.

Download the 2002 Service manual from the site on the thread named the same and go to section 21 Transaxle and go to Solenoid/Pressure Switch and it will explain function. You may need to take it to a tranny shop and have codes and pressure checked, possibly replace solenoid.

It's a V6 with about 150000 miles on it. Had it since 2004 and the fluid has never been flushed....

I DO NOT recommend a flush of the transmission fluid. Flushing the transmission could only cause more particles to be stirred up and possibly plug valves and such. I do although recommend a change of the transmission filter and fluid. If you take it somewhere to have filter and fluid changed make sure that ATF+4 FLUID ONLY is installed. (DO NOT LET THEM TALK YOU INTO A UNIVERSAL FLUID AND THEN ADDING A ADDITIVE)

To do the filter and fluid change yourself:

Raise vehicle with either car ramps or jacking front end up and supporting vechicle with jack stands.

Remove all bolts on transmission oil pan except 1 bolt in each corner.

Get yourself a large aluminium turkey roasting pan from the store and place under pan (SHould be large enough to cover size of pan.

Remove bolt at the lowest point of the pan, gently pry the oil pan away from the tranny using a scewdriver making sure you do not damage pan and fluid does not all come out at once.

Once oil no longer drains out of pan remove remaining bolts and remove pan, there will still be a small amoount of oil in the pan.

Clean Pan taking notice of the amount of material and what kind of particles on magnet in pan.

Remove and replace transmission filter.

Install oil pan using either a new pan gasket or RTV silicone gasket maker. Do not over tighten tranny oil pan bolts to avoid stripping the threads.

Install about 4 quarts of fluid and run engine to normal operating temperature and shifting tranny throught all the gears several times and check fluid level and fill to proper level. Check oil pan for any leaks.

Look at the Online Service manuals and I believe it will help with the torque specifications and tranny filter change procedure.

I would do this and test drive vehicle to see if the operation of tranny has changed. If not you will need to have a shop look at it.

You will need to replace the solenoid pack. 2002 to 2004 Intrepids have a chronic failure in that area. I've owned three 02's and had to replace the solenoid packs on all of them to fix the code P0700 and limp mode.

sounds like a typical dodge intrepid to me....i see them a dime for a dozen with bad trannys. if you do end up needing a tranny i would look into getting one rebuilt if your keeping the car for awhile. the ones at a junk yard your probably gonna have the same problems with. good luck.
