79 TA 403 w/ bog going up hill
Magic Rat,
My 403 engine bogs and quits going up a hill. Carb is rebuilt, timing is right. It passes emissions but doesn't take the gas like a vacuum leak exists. If I accelerate on a level road, the secondaries open for an instant and then the motor will almost quit unless I get out of the throttle and work up to speed slowly. The secondary valve is adjusted at 1/2 turn according to the book. I have original cat converter and wondered if it could be this. How do I check it? I'm scratching my head again. Need the experts again. Walt |

Re: 79 TA 403 w/ bog going up hill
Drive the car around till it gets good and warm, when it is dark out. Then stop the car and get out and look up under it at the cat. If the cat is glowing, it is plugged.
When I had my 79 T/A I rebuilt the carb and set it myself, by ear. The directions in the manuals call for setting it using a "propane enrichment tool" and I didn't have one or have access to one or know how to use it so I did it myself using a vacuum gauge instead (had to buy the special tool to fit the adjusters). It worked just fine. The car got 26 mpg on the highway at 80 mph anf had good power & pick up. |

I fixed the bog.
The power brake vacuum booster didn't seem right when you put on the brakes. Turns out, it is defective and will need to be replaced. Driving now with manual brakes. I plugged the vacuum line to the brake vacuum booster and the bog went away. Walt |
