lumina 3.8 L 3800 idle eratic idle after jump start
hi...i have a 98 lumina witha a 3.8 Liter 3800 in it. it had sat for months and the battery died. this car is really hard to jump start with a totally dead battery. 1 of 4 times will turn over a little..mostly just clicks. after trying for ever i jump started it once...and it ran great. idled fine..i let it idle for almost an hour then cut it off and it was still dead. next day i tried jumping it again. i believe i made the mistake of putting the negative on the - battery terminal and not on a ground somewhere else. there was a pop when i tried to start it. i bought a battery put it in..it starts fine but then almost dies and races to 4000 rpm back and forth. this happened to me a couple years ago and i thought i fried the computer. had it towed to electrical guy. i looked at the receipt and he cleaned the throttle body and "air intake valve" and charged the battery. i seem to remember him telling me he replaced a fuse but not sure which one and really not sure if he did. anyway..so i've tried cleaning the throttle body, and then started it and sprayed inside TB and air intake port while it was running pretty like the instructions on the can said. i tried doing the relearn..but i can't put it on the road yet..it gets to where it will idle around 1000 rpm but it is really rough. any advice is greatly appreciated as i am kicking myself for not just replacing the battery in the first place, since before the pop it ran fine when i jumped it. and i nonw have been working on and researching this for days and can't find a solution. thanks.

Sorry for not updating this sooner. I hate it when people try to help figure out the problem and then there if the person figures it out, they don't tell what fixed it. And then I did it.
So...embarrasingly..it was the power brake booster hose that somehow had blown/popped off. I had been hearing the sucking sound but always associated it with having the air intake off. And then, after cleaning everything, looking all over for answers, etc., I'm in there, and am like..where is that sucking sound coming from. And I see the hose had fallen down behind the engine. There was/is no clamp on that hose..just pushed it back on and the car ran smooth as silk again. All that running the car..idling all crazy..trying to get the comp to reset..cleaning the throttle body and sensors, etc..wasted time frustrated like crazy and it was a giant vacuum hose. I knew it could be a hose but thought it would be one near the throttle body. I bet that was all that was wrong the last time too, since the cause/sympton was exactly the same. But since the circumstances made me think of the computer or electrical system, and since I know almost nothing about that stuff, I got charged like $150, probably to stick a hose back on. Oh well. Thanks for all that took a look and esp. the ones that replied. |
