transmission goes to neutal

I have a 99 GTP. 129K going down the road the cars just lost all gears. I coasted to a stop and had nothing. I shut the car off and then started 1 minute later and it was ok. Went about a mile and it did the same thing. What can it be?

Re: transmission goes to neutal

What forward gear are you in when this occurs....1, 2, 3, or 4(OD)? If in 4th - OD this is one possible symptom of a bad 4th clutch shaft. Transmission will default to neutral.

worst case, trans is shot and is plugging the filter. Does it start to whine when it stops?

It does it in any gear. There is a little whine right before it stops. Could this be that the filter or tube has come loose and after the fluid is sucked up it doesn' t have enough fluid to run the tranny?

Out of curiosity was a 50K or 100K mile transmission service consisting of screen filter and ATF ever performed on this autotransaxle?
