High RPM at idle normal?

Is it normal for a 2003 Spectra to idle at a stop light around 900 RPMs? This car seems to be sucking gas. Any ideas?

Re: High RPM at idle normal?

Ever do the lawn as a kid and the mower runs out of gas? You hear that little guy rise in rpm? That is lean, high rpm mean. You heard that engine peak right before it runs out of gas.

Man, if you could get that lean and that high an rpm, you would be sailing past gas stations for a few weeks. So, say that is an air leak will do the same thing?

I would start with a cold engine so you are backed out of the garage so as not to catch the whole place on fire is just the car. You being all cold exhaust manifolds have a better chance of nature sucking in that air leak and not sucking your wallet dry the mechanic is going to attempt the same trick.

So, say you have brake clean or contact cleaner in a spray can? It will evaporate off the engine parts where if you used WD-40 leaves an oil film. You want to aim at intake areas the engine is going to suck some air from the air cleaner on out. Take that engine idling, run out of the car and start spraying intake hose lines and all that builds an intake manifold and uses gaskets (that separate and cause an air path); that may create a new air leak to lean out the car and raise the idle like it is a lawnmower running out of gas.
