87 rx turbo mystery

any one out There know how to get the codes out of rx turbo?
ecs lamp comes on and off and it is stalling and restarting and dieing.
I have looked at auto tech for answers .....it said connect the two black diagnostic plugs and read codes from check engine light (cel) but I only have one black plug and have an ecs light not cel (check engine light).
Also when it won't start it has all it needs ie spark, injection pulse, fuel pressure and flow and appears to have decent compression too as it is hard to turn by hand. I got it started by squirting in ether then it ran fine for a while.
Bad fuel won't bring on an ecs light so I'm confused....
