Re: Speedometer

Look at the end of the speedometer cable. Usually around the transmission.

Welcome to Automotive Forums

Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
It's a single bolted sensor on the drivers side of the tranny
behind the Transmission Range Sensor, just forward of the drive shaft.
Check to see that it's not loose or bent, that it's connector is on tight and not damaged,
inspect the sensor and connector pins for damage, dirt or corrosion.

Re: Speedometer

Thanks for the welcome and the info all. This is the first time i have own a cougar for myself. My wife owns a 99 Kat 2.5 which is a quick little car. My previous car was a 94 STS and unfortunatly i fell under the dreded Northstar motor head gasket problem. I love the car, but will not invest $2500 into getting the motor timeserted. Most of all trying to find a qualified mechanic who knows how to do that type of job on this complex motor. I got the 95 Kat at a deal i could not pass up. Being a Caddy guy all my life, i realized the Kat 4.6 motor is such a simple and easy motor to work on. it has 150,000 miles on it, the car was sitting a while, but i see no oil leaks what so ever, no new wet spots or old. I replaced the plugs, pcv, oil, and air filter. The car does smell like it is burning a little rich, what else should i take a look at and replace?

Suspension.
Ball joints & bushings.

You might consider running some carbon deposit remover,
like Seafoam, through the engine.

Clean your MAF sensor.
