Fuel pump?

So I may have been oblivious to the noise since I bought the car, but I noticed the fuel pump is rather noisy when the engine is hot. Imagine that normal whirring/buzz sound you get when you first turn the key (initial pump action)...and then when you turn the car on you can't hear the pump when it's running. I've noticed when I go for a LONG drive the pump starts to make that same noise all the time...You notice it more when you pull up beside a car or wall. I don't know if that is normal or if that's a sign the pump is on it's way out. Again, I don't think it does that (or it's not nearly as loud) when the engine is cold.

The fuel filter was changed with an OEM Delco filter and there are NO other tell-tale signs of failure, the car always starts VERY quickly and never hesitates.

Re: Fuel pump?

I recall some other forum members had issues with a noisy fuel pump but until it craps out I would not worry about it. I had a '96 Chevy Lumina sedan with a noisy one at around 80K miles and last time I checked it is still running.

Re: Fuel pump?

Thanks for the response.

I was just contemplating whether or not to just order a new one to keep on hold in case it fails because if and when it fails, I'll need one immediately. Since the dealers in Canada are pretty much highway thieves I'm guessing they'd charge north of 500 bucks, and considering I can order one elsewhere for around 300 I'd feel better saving money. I just wasn't sure if it was even worth getting a spare as the only times I've noticed noisy operation was twice now, once after driving it rather hard (a couple 1/4 mile runs) and after a hour and a half to two hour drive. I'm going on a few more long trips in the next couple weeks, I guess I'll see if it's still acting up...
