got my ass beat

I raced a ford focus last night and the kid had an intake (hot air) and cat back, he was way faster off the line but once I hit second he was mine. My problem is on the take off I've tried 1500 on the first race and 1300 on the second race the lower one was better but he still blew me off the line. I've got kyb agx, 17's with kumho 711 , 5sp w/short throw, cai obx catback battery in the trunk and I'm smokin the pass wheel all the damn time in first and chirp'n real good in second. any body got some good advice --I mean it was a focus-no weight so I can handle some jump off the line but not a car length. Of course it could be my driving style, I haven't realy tried feathering the clutch-- any advice on this would be helpful.

What size tires are you running?

Maybe avoid dropping the clutch from higher than idle, and try not to slam it during transitions? Been a while since I drove a clutch.

I'm confused
You beat the focus but he beat you off the line?
Or did the focus just kick your ass?

Feather the clutch at about 3k rpms. Don't do this a lot because this wears out the clutch, but you will be able to transmit the maximum torque without spinning the wheels if you do it right, and once you get going, you'll be in the peak of the power band, then SHIFT_

A Focus SVT is fast as hell. My boss has one, no mods, its about as fast as my Max if not a tiny bit faster. 170hp with something like a 2700lb curb weight makes for a fast car.

Would the wear on the clutch be less if he had a high performance clutch?

not beat totally

we only raced like 100-200 yards. I would of beat him if we raced farther but heblew me off the line the first time by a car length and the second time by half a car length. I think that'll I'm gonna have to re-learn how to launch the car definately not dropping the clutch and going wot from 1300 rpm. I 'm gonna learn how to feather the clutch. I got the kids number and were gonna meet up and try it again.

I have a ACT street clutch, they rock. They grab really hard and all that good stuff. Only downside is the 600 mile break in period and then the 1000mile period until you can race.

next time don't let off of the gas when you shift into second, keep it pinned, then slam in the clutch right before the gear runs out and just dump into second. keep your right foot on the floor the whole time
i blew a type-r off the line doing this. i obliterated the tires into second. don't do it often it's probably not too great for the clutch. i've done it maybe 4 times in the 2 years i've owned the car.
