Arrow Need lots of help ASAP! Plz!

Ok, my dad gave me a 1991 S10 4x4 4.3l v6 When he gave it to me it had a little trouble starting. I had to pump the gas to get it to stay idling and sometimes it would die when I slowed down if I didn't get up to a decent speed before slowing down. So he suggested that all it might be is a fuel filter, so I changed that and it didn't work. Then I had a friend who said he knew about cars come over and he said that it was the timing was off because my dad had the dist cap changed and he thought the guy had the timing off. So he adjusted it and things were working fine for a week or two. Then they started messing up again and this time it was harder for it to idle and when I tried to put it into gear (either rev or drive) it dies. Now it won't idle and it's impossible to put into gear without it cutting off. They put the timing back so that's not it. Like I said they replaced the fuel filter, TPS sensor and the IAC valve. He seems to think it might be dumping too much fuel and flooding itself out and smells like bad gas. If anyone can please help me out I'd greatly appreciate it as I am stuck with no ride and can't get home. Thanks so much!

If it has an EGR valve take that off the front and try to clean any carbon out of it. Little plunger should be able to close completly, if there is too much buildup or chunks of carbon in the way, it will not be able to.

Is the check engine light on?
Check for codes and post back code no.

Re: Need lots of help ASAP! Plz!

Sorry about the no codes.....I'm trying to figure this out on my own. After I posted I then saw the code "paper clip" trick and was so excited I forgot to repost. The codes read = 22-TPS 24-VSS 34-MAP sensors....I replaced them all except the VSS because my speedom was fine so I figured it can wait..... now it's still has a problem so I am currently trying the EGR valve...I'll let you know...in the meantime any other help is greatly appreciated and thanks for the suggestions so far!

After a repair you need to clear codes and then see if any codes come back.
And remember a code does not say replace the part but to check it out.
On the map sensor make sure it is getting good vacuum.
Clear codes and post back what comes back.
Good Luck

I guess he spoke with a mechanic that he knows and they seem to think that it is the distributor shaft itself?? That it will cause my problems and make the computer read that it's all those sensors when it's not....sound right to you guys???

A lose dist shaft may make it run bad but not set the codes you have.
It takes Proper testing to find the problem.
Good luck

Re: Need lots of help ASAP! Plz!

Like MT said, you have to test things properly before replacing, or your just chasing things. This can get costly and just waste time. Has the fuel pressure been checked? If its over pressure as a result of a sticking or defective regulator, it will dump too much fuel. The ECM simply cannot compenste and the truck will run bad or not run at all. Carbon build up at the base of the throttle body can block the vacuum ports at the back causing all sorts of issues. The EGR is another place to look at, like SBlazerNCS mentioned, could cause problems.

The TBI systems are reliable, and not that bad to diagnose, but you must check the basics first to pinpoint your problem.
