Re: 93 4 runner rear window

The good news is that the motor is running! We need a little more info though....
Does the motor ever reach the limit switch and stop or does it run continuous until you let the switch go?
If it stops, then the window has become detached from the mechanism, if not then the mechanism is not moving and not activating the limit switches. It is not the relay control module or a fuse, (if the motor is running as you say it is).

The carpeted cardboard just snaps off the tailgate, then remove the screws that secure the metal cover.
The problem with the 4runner window in the tailgate is that the metal framework will bend inward from weight being applied to the center of the tailgate. When this happens, the window mechanism is put into a physical bind and the gear can strip its teeth. I always pull the metal frame above flush and reshape the metal plate that is under the carpet.
CAUTION: When you get the tailgate down you will need to extend the window, (roll it up), while the tailgate is down. HAVE SOMETHING READY TO SUPPORT THE GLASS, it is heavy and will break the mechanism or the glass itself.
The way to activate the motor with the tailgate open or down is to “fake” the relay control box the tailgate is closed. To do this take a screwdriver and “close” both side tailgate latches both of them as they both have switches. Remember to “open” the tailgate latches before you try to close it by just pulling on the handle. This way you can observe the functionality of the mechanism and hopefully what is wrong.
Align the window before replacing the covers, make sure that the window moves freely through the full range of movement. This is why you have a problem in the first place is too much friction.
check the movement with the taligate open and see if it runs freely that wy you know that it is alignment with the upper seal that is hindering its motion.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Re: 93 4 runner rear window

i removed the cover and the little gear on the lift motor has worn out it just spins, it looks plastic against a metal regulator, the window was a little slow at the top going up before this happened but im sure i need a new motor for i dont think u can just get the gear can i replace it without putting the gate down? and what are u talking about when u say adjusting the track?framework? whats causing the friction?

Re: 93 4 runner rear window

I would suggest checking at junk yards for a tailgate they cant sell because of body damage and buy the regulator out of it and swap out the motor and gear or just the gear if you can.
If the window was slow at the top, as most are, it is because the window wants to track in a different direction.
Free up the binding by straightening the frame work of the tailgate in the center. I don’t think there is a way to adjust the tracks inside the tailgate itself. You can also use a DRY lubricant, DO NOT use anything that will promote colleting dust and dirt as this will only work for a short time before it starts to gum up with contaminants and stop the window entirely.
You might be able to replace gear/motor with the tailgate up. Just a note the motor should only turn one direction if the window is in fact all the way up. Due to the limit switch.
