Good disk brakes for rear? 2002 Ranger XLT 4X4 with 4.0 SOHC

What are some good disk brakes that I can put on the rear of my truck? It's a 2002 Ranger XLT with four wheel drive powered by the 4.0 single overhead cam engine. I'm having a minor snafu out of one of my rear drums, but can't seem to get the part I need (all it is is an adjuster cable, but Autozone won't give me the right one! ). I also don't like drum brakes as well.

It's not impossible but it will be extremely difficult to convert your rear drum brakes to disk brakes. Check with Pep Boys, if you have one in your area.

I guess what you're saying is that I'll have to do some custom fitting, huh?

A lot of custom fitting unless you have a front wheel drive which I'm sure none of the Rangers have.

The rear brake drums are a lot of trouble for the rangers. I have had two seperate ranger where the rear drums eventually seized or dragged. Especially in cold wet weather. The proble will ly with your rear E-brake cable assembly. IT seems to get junk in it and will not allow the brakes to release all the way.

What you'll need to change this cable is a new cable and you will probably have to redo the bake shoes and turn the drums. After this if you use the E-brake ever time you park you will avoid the corrosion in the cable and should keep it trouble free. Mine has been fine for 3 years after I replaced it.

AS far as the rear brake conversion you should be able to swap with rear Explorer disc brakes. These are basically the same truck and run the same rear axels so the mounts will be the same. I am not too sure if you'd need to swap the internal axel- hopefully not. Might take some minor replumbing of the brake lines. I'd simply go to the parts yard and have a look at how the plumbing and cables run. You could call your parts dealer to see how long your axels innards are for each vehicle and go from there.

I never went this far because properly fixing the rear drums and constantly using the E brake has cleared up all problems.

Good luck!
