Lost and found

Last year I was working at a service shop. I took the car to work every day and would meet up with my wife for lunch at our business we were getting started. She was starting to ride her bike to the business, towing our son in a bike trailer. Well she decided that she like riding there, but not home cause we lived on top of a good sized hill. So I when I would meet up for lunch I would give her the car and take her bike to back to work and then ride home. Well the bike got stolen one night. I go out to ride home and it's gone. I always parked it behind the shop. We were bummed but I got another bike working for her this summer. Yesterday we rode our bikes to the store and guess what I found! I decided to stand by it until someone came out and tried to ride off with it. In the process I saw a police officer going into the store and told him my story and asked him if I had any claim on the bike. He called another officer over and she waited with me until someone came out, which never happened. So she took the bike back to the station and told me that if no one claimed the bike in a few days I could come and pick it up! Amazing! I bet the guy saw me and the cop standing around the bike and just kept walking like he didn't own it.

How lucky is that! Cool that you'll get your bike back soon.....sucks that people can't spring for their own bicycle.

In my town every year at Christmas there is a huge bike giveaway. This guy who owns a local funeral home collects bikes all year and fixes them up with donated parts and money from the community. He also has volunteers come to help out fixing them. Some local businesses also volunteer space to act as a drop off point such as Home Depot. The giveaway is held on a Saturday morning, with families lining up around the block in anticipation. Most of the bikes are gone within a couple of hours, and in the past couple of years, some local businesses have donated bike helmets to give to each new bike owner. The local police also help out in fitting the helmets and selecting proper size bikes for the kids. Many families who never owned a bike or went cycling together now have that chance thanks to this business owner.
Also many of the local police agencies get together and hold an auction every year with all of the bikes that they have in their inventories from being lost or "stolen recoveries". One thing a bike owner should do is to file a report with description of their bike which can make it easier to identify if lost/stolen. Many people do not realize this and find out about the auction and end up locating their bike at the impound yard days before the auction.

Re: Lost and found

Some of the parts that I had recently put on were removed. Many of the parts were disconnected, like the rear brakes. Other then that it's ok. The main reason that I want it back is the original reason I got the thing. My brother gave me his old bike frame, the one that my wife is currently using. It's all good accept the rims. THe rims on the bike that got stolen were the best part on the bike. Quick release hubs, schimonno hubs. I want to put them on her new bike to make it complete.

schimonno makes pretty crappy hubs.

Shimano on the other hand makes hubs from 'just OK' to really good.

Wrong again.

It's totally dependant upon type and application.

K better then Walmart crapy bolt on!

We just ride around town. The sum of her wheels and tires weigh more then the core of the bike.

Re: Lost and found

Update!

Police called yesterday. I have to come up with proof that I bought some parts for the bike. I'm headed to my local bike shop to see if they can produce a receipt for the transaction... Wish me luck!

Re: Lost and found

about a month ago my suband & dauther went to the pool spot. he accidently left his trunk on the roof of the car, drove 5 min home, realized what happened, and he wnt back. no trunks.

2 day later they went back to swim and some little boy had them on. we got them away on vacation...no mistake they were them. just to be sure he tells the kid "cool shorts, where did you get them?" kid replies "my daddy found them in the road"....so for sure they were ours. my husband watches as the kid runs to his mommy. now that he knows who she is he approaches her and explaines those are his shorts he got on vacation & he accidently left them on the car. her reply was "my husband found them, they're his now...dont make me call him down there" screamimg the "f" word in that mix causing her kid to start crying. my husband being more of an adult simply told her "apparently you need them more than I" he them turned around and apologized to all the crowd (most kids) for the lady stealing his shorts & the cursing him out.

she immediately left.

I wish I would have been there as I would have asked (as loud as possible) "did you even wash those before you put your son in them?"

not trying to hi-jack your thread...sorry. it was another crazy lost & found story

Re: Lost and found

Well the place cant find the receipt. They can go back that far but can not pull up the receipt for it. So I hope my bank statement transaction will work. It most likely wont...

Re: Lost and found

Hm, that sucks. Should have written down a serial number or known something about it.

UCF had bike auctions of bikes left unattended. THey had notes on them then after so many days they took them and sold them spring semester.

If you used your card and it's from the bank, then your statement should be enough proof....they cops just need some sort of paper trail as proof.
