2000 Passoprt - replaced FSU, now excessive cranking..
2000 Passport EX-L, V-6 auto, 65k mi.
I have been reading lots of info here and am slowly getting my vehicle back to good health. I was having some real issues with hesitation when taking off from a stop. Tried a few things, cleaning the MAF sensor with the cleaner mentioned here seems to have fixed that issue. Was also having problems with very rough idle and evntually dying after starup, but that has gone away as well. I just replaced the FSU, saved me about $700 cause of course the dealer said I needed new fuel pump...so thanks for the help there! Anyways, as soon as I refueled the tank and tried to start the vehicle, it cranks for a long time. Over the last week I have had it start right up one time, all the rest have taken much longer than normal. Is it possible that the relay or pressure regulator just happened to go at the same time? Thanks. |

Start with replacing the fuel filter. If that doesnt help I would look at the fuel pressure regulator. Its probably been bad for a while and could be whats been causing your problems.

I failed to mention that part. I have changed the fuel filter, prior to changing out the FSU. I'll get a regulator and see if that fixes things. Thanks for the help!

Ok, new fuel pressure regulator is in. The cranking issue seems better, but still exists. If starting the engine after it has been sitting for 30+ min. it takes some extra cranking, if starting within 5 min. of last run it starts right up like normal.
Any further suggestions? |

Sounds like you may have put a small cut or nick in the hose on the fuel pump assembly it self causin pressure to leak down. You'll have to pull the pump out and look at the accordian looking hose on the pump.

Aww man.. I really don't like the prospect of taking that out again.. but you have a great point. Looks like I need to go for a drive to use up the 1/2 tank of gas in there..
Thanks for the suggestion. |

Definately sounds like a bad seal or cracked/spilt hose.
I was told the FSU won't work with 2002's an up. Can anyone prove me wrong or do I need to replace the whole pump? |

Oval,
I could be wrong, but I think I've seen some posts, either in this forum or planetisuzoo.com with people having done it on a 2002. I just did mine a couple weekends ago, but I have an '01 Mark

You have a cut or leakage in your hose in the fuel pump. You can either patch it it get a new fuel pump. Exactly same happened to me. Replaced FSU then hard over cranking, replaced fuel pump and viola problem solved. Off course I didn't need to do that, because the cut was very small and could have easily been repaired.
