2000 Speedometer & Tach Quit "no bus"

Hi everyone:

I searched this topic and found a few dead end posts on this subject. Hopefully I didn't overlook the cure.

Anyway, while driving, 2 or 3 times a week my speedometer and tach drop dead, and my check engine and airbag light come on. "no bus" is shown in the odometer display. All of my other gauges continue to work fine during this episode, which only lasts about a minute or two. It usually occurs within 10 minutes or so after leaving my house. Seems like a loose connection???

Any ideas?

It is a loose connection. Behind the instrument pod there is a large electrical connector with about 15 or 20 pins that supplys power and information to the instrument cluster. That connector is loose. you need to pull the connector apart and slightly twist every pin so they fit tighter and make better contact in the female half of the connector. This is a common problem, mostly on wranglers but it also effects later (97-01) Cherokees. Ive never had to correct this in a Cherokee so Im not sure of the procedure for accessing the connector, I dont know if you have to remove the instrument pod or if you can reach up behind it to get to the connector. I know in a Wrangler the pod needs to be removed from the dash. Good luck with it and report back how you do it so others will know. While you have that connector apart it wouldnt hurt to clean it up good and put some dielectric grease in it.

I'll work on finding the connector that you are talking about and tighten and clean it up. It hasn't given me the problem since my original post. But, its worth checking out.
