Full size tire replacing spare.

Hey I know i had made a recent thread about this, but I wanted to elaborate the full size tire i bought. I went to a junk yard and found two smashed up luminas. The only tire that looks worth having is a 16 inch white rim wheel. This came with the rim as well as the tire which both looked to be in good condition. The biggest worry i have is set aside the condition of the tire is there going to be a problem with using 1 alloy wheel while the other three are not?

I have measured the soon to be spare with the regular tires and they are about the same size.

I hate to think i use this as a spare and it does more harm than good.

I think i have answered my question, So i am driving a 98 lumina which are riding on tires size: Standard tire size is 205/70-15
Where 1 spare tire i bought is: 225/60-16

So is 1 225/60-16 going to affect the rest three that are standard size?

maybe you will depending it it's on front or back. have you tryed putting on front or rear yet to see if it clears? 15 to a 16 i dono unless you it try it see if it clears until you get home.

My 1999 LTZ comes with that size tire. 225/60-16. I had thought of buying a aluminum rim with that size tire but didn't think it would fit.

I will give it a shot and see if it will actually fit once on. I mean come on its just 1 inch over what the other three is.

but wouldn't you want to see if it clears or not if you get out on the road and it don't clear.my sons had 16's also..

I willl make sure to see if it will fit, In case that it does not i will go back to the salvage yard and see if i can replace it with a regular non alloy rim. I didnt think it was going be an issue but oh well i still am willing to fit for a full size tire for a spare.


I just hate i will have to give it up because i spent an hour last night getting it cleaned up from the outside elements.

Hey doesnt Pontiac GA use the original 15''? I thought impala's that are rimless have the regular 15'' also. I figure instead of looking for lumina i could look at different model cars to just pull the tire off them since the luminas i saw either didnt have a tire or they were alloys.

What do yall think

The used tire guy I bought some off said that I could go the other way.

My tire (standard for /94 Lumina Euro?) is 225/ R60-16.

He said I could go something like a 205/ R70-16 (same rim) and get the same height, which is probably the most important parameter (other than lateral clearance).


I am still confused about how to understand these numbers.

Tire Type defines the proper use of the tire. For example, the “P” on the tire shown here means that this is a passenger car tire. If the tire had an “LT” designation, the tire would be for a light truck.

Tire Width is the width of the tire measured in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall. This tire width is 215 millimeters.

Aspect Ratio is the ratio of the height of the tire's cross-section to its width. On our example, 65 means that the height is equal to 65% of the tire's width.

Construction tells you how the layers of the tire were put together. The “R” stands for Radial which means the layers run radially across the tire. A “B” stands for bias construction which means that the layers run diagonally.

Wheel Diameter is the width of the wheel from one end to the other. The diameter of this wheel is 15 inches.

Load Index indicates the maximum load in pounds that the tire can support when properly inflated. You'll also find the maximum load elsewhere on the tire sidewall, both in pounds and kilograms.

Speed Rating tells you the maximum service speed for a tire. “H” means that the tire has a maximum service speed of 130 mph. This rating relates only to tire speed capability and is NOT a recommendation to exceed legally posted speed limits. Speed Rating Chart

DOT means that the tire complies with all applicable safety standards established by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Next to this is a tire identification or serial number — a combination of numbers and letters up to 12 digits.

UTQG stands for Uniform Tire Quality Grading, a rating system developed by DOT.

see thats what his car was 16 i was wanduring why you tryed 16 because like said 16's my son had same year to. are you going to get all 16's all the way around i no you have 15's so rim's wont work huh?

Scrapper1 your right i have 15'' steel wheel rim. I will have to take the white 16'' alloy back and see if 1. Will they take it back or 2. Will they let me exchange it for a 15'' steel wheell rim. I will more than likely go find one from a grand am or something equivalent because i mean its just a regular 15'' steel wheel. I could however change out all the 15'' wheels and replace them with 16 alloy but i feel thats just over kill. The chances of me finding all four 16 alloys same color are slim to none.

I did found one on ebay that i might nab but i will talk with the salvage yard before i make the purchase, i even thought about selling my alloy on ebay to see if anyone would be interested. It has a tire already on it with tread in pretty good shape.
