Alternator not charging

I replaced the alternator in my 2002 GC over the weekend. The old alternator was charing but had a noisiy bearing. When I went to the auto part store, there were two options for a rebuilt alternator listed for the Dodge Grand Caravan Sport 3.3L; a 140 amp and a 160 amp. Not sure what amperage the orginial alternator (no nameplate) was but the store sold me the 140 amp alternator.

I installed the rebuilt alternator but it did not produce a charge. I unhooked the wires and reconnected them, then the alternator produced a charge. Later in the day, I go to drive the van and the battery light comes on. I tested the alternator and no charge.

Anyone know if the 140 amp alternator mounts the same as the 160 amp? Maybe I have the wrong amperage alternator. Or maybe it is a wiring problem but nothing changed with the wires.

Fuse and ASD relay are OK.

Re: Alternator not charging

I pulled the rebuilt alternator. The second time around was much easier. It took about 15 minutes to remove the alternator. I took the alternator back to the auto part store to have it test. It had a bad diode. They gave me another rebuilt alternator. I installed it and the vehicle is working fine.

FYI, the 140 amp and the 160 amp alternator do have the same mounting configuration.
