1999 problem with gauges

I have a problem with the gauges in my 1999 windstar. Every now and then all the gauges will max out then go back to normal, any ideas?

Re: 1999 problem with gauges

This could be caused by a problem with the voltage regulator, or ground....some electrical connection that is in common with all the effected gauges.
As I recall......sensors provide a ground path......to the voltage from the instrument panel......with the reading varying with the resistance to ground through each sensor.

Looking at the information for my '96

Temp sensor for temp gauge, 74 ohms cold...... 10 ohms HOT

Fuel level sensor resistor will be between about 15 ohms (empty) and 150 ohms (full)

For conventional (not the digital) instrument panel....the GEM (General Electronics Module) is used for Door adjar, low washer fluid and fasten seat belts indicators.

Please let us know if this is a digital dash or analog dash.
Then someone who has worked on the same dash as you have.....with a closer year to you may be able to help.

Re: 1999 problem with gauges

If it happens at start-up, I would suspect the PCM power relay.

Re: 1999 problem with gauges

I had the exact same problem about 1 yr ago. It was either the alternator or voltage regular which is part of the alternator starting in 99 for the 3.8 liter engine. In otherwords, you cant just replace the voltage regulator if that is the problem. Bought a New (I wouldn't buy a rebuilt alt) Bosch alternator and replaced it. Cost about $220. Car runs great.
