Can anyone help me out I have a 89 Buick Century that starts up fine when cold but after it warms up it will shut off and wont start again till its cold. I'm new to Buick and have no clue where to start beings I have no codes to help me out in detecting the problem. It's a 6 cly. if that has any thing to due with it. need to get it fixed asap for my wife to drive to her new job. any help will be great. Thanks

Re: 89 Buick Century wont start if warmed up

There is a possibility that the crank position sensor has gone bad. These will usually act up when the engine gets hot and then it must cool off before the car will restart. They also will not throw a code unless they completely fail. I would start there and see what happens. The only other thing I can think of is a possible bad fuel pump. They too will overheat and stop pumping. You may want to check the fuel pressure when the car is hot so that you can see if the pump is providing enough pressure to start the car. Should be around 45 pounds. You can connect the guage at the fuel rail and they can be rented from an autoparts store for a few dollars.

Good Luck!! and Welcome to AF!!
