94 saturn SL1 Front bearing Hub - transaxle noise
I changed the front bearing hub on passager side with no problems according to repair manual. It is a manual transmission. Upon backing up I had no problems but once I shifted to first and let out the clutch I had a grinding noise. I put it up on jacks and wheels spun fine in forward gear. It is possible the transaxle can pull out of transmission or slightly disengage from this procedure - book did not indicate this and it seems to be engaged. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: 94 saturn SL1 Front bearing Hub - transaxle noise
I think it would be obvious that the inner U-joint assembly of the curbside axle shaft had partly pulled out - by comparing the right and left axles: Unless yours has the 'intermediate' shaft on the curbside of the tranny. If it does, and you didnt unbolt the joint where the axle shaft connects to the intermediate shaft (which I think bolts to the rear of the engine block), it certainly Would Not have pulled out of the transmission.
Are you sure the hub nut got torqued up to full tightness? Im thinking the griding noise might be something on the brake caliper rubbing because the hub isnt tight in the spindle. |

Re: 94 saturn SL1 Front bearing Hub - transaxle noise
Thanks for reply. Found out that hub spine may not have been machined right or too much wear on spline of transaxle into hub/bearing as it was spinning in hub and grinding the internal gears. Thought I was going to have to buy new hub bearing and transaxle shaft but J&B WELD applied to inner hub gear fixed the problem at least for now. Thanks again for your input as your response could have been the problem as well.
