I had to replace my starter on my 92 Transport 3.8L (what a &*^(*%&^% NITEMARE!) and now I am having a high pitch squeel when I start it (at least it starts!) I have seen something about shims but there were none on the original and as I am on a very tight budget I got the starter at a pick a part location and that one also had no shims. Any ideas on the best way to adjust the starter to the correct position???? Any input would be greatly appriciated, Thank you!

Re: 92 Transport Starter Issue
Had the exact same thing but only once & on a 2.8 gm. Never fixed it (ended up selling the car) but did get a set of shims.
Fwiw, the shims I had could be installed (pretty sure..) by loosening the starter bolts & sliding the shim(s) in, but one starter bolt had to be backed out enuff to clear a closed hole (circle or 'O' shaped) in the shim vs the other bolt hole that was open & 'U' shaped. Someone else will have to chime in.. but I think it needs to be addressed. Using a starter 'till it goes is one thing if it doesn't affect anything else, but my concern is that it could also damage the flywheel ring gear.

Re: 92 Transport Starter Issue
Thank you for the info. I talked to a friend who is very mechanicly inclined and he states the starter is to close and the shims should take care of the issue. All the shims I have seen so far it looks like you have to take the bolts completely out so if someone has a source of where I can pick up the shims that have that can be uses without backing them all the way out that would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 92 Transport Starter Issue
Unless the starter you got is a reman, I have never seen a 3800 with a started shim.. I have seem some really sorry remans tho that had an angle on the face of the starter and could not even be shimmed to correct for the problem..
But I do feel for you... My starter on my 95 TS was getting weak, and the trans was going out... When I pulled the trans( removed a section of subframe ) I replaced the starter...lol.... It would have been a nightmare if that section of Sub Frame was there.. |
