2003 Sport Trac, no wipers, dome lights & Speedo

My 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac has no wipers, dome lights or chimes. The odometer and speedometer is also not operating. We have checked all the fuses & relays - none are blown and all are getting power. We have checked other dialogues which have made mention of the GEM - Generic Electronic Module. If all fuses and relays are working, could our problems be related to the GEM, if so where is it located and how is it troubleshot? Or are we going in the wrong direction? Please help - it's raining and I don't know how fast I'm going or how far I've gone.......

Re: 2003 Sport Trac, no wipers, dome lights & Speedo

I've taken a quick look at the wiring diagrams for a 2002 Sport Trac which should be similar to your 2003. The GEM does seem reasonable, but unfortunately it's not something you can replace without having access to dealership tools. It needs to be programmed to the vehicle. Some professional scan tools can access the GEM which may be a good next step before visiting the dealership for troubleshooting.

The wipers are powered from fuse F2.9 (30-ampere) in the Central Junction box (CJB) through relays which are activated by the GEM.

The interior lights are powered from fuse F2.17 (15-ampere) also in the CJB through the battery saver relay, Accessory Delay relay, and Interior Lamp relay.

The chime is built in to the GEM.

And finally the GEM does provide inputs to the instrument cluster as well. I don't see where it directly controls either the speedo or the odometer though.

There are a lot of fuses to check though related to the GEM. In the battery junction box, check fuses F1.2 (20A) and F1.25 (20A). In the CJB check fuses F2.13 (5A), F2.20 (5A), F2.29 (5A), F2.16 (20A) and F2.27 (7.5A).

Thanks. Sounds like I should check out all the other fuses first, before getting the GEM checked out. What kind of reader do I need to check the GEM out?

The OTC Genisys, Mac Determinator, and the Cornwell Tools version of the same can access the GEM. I'm not sure if the Snap-On MT-2500 or whatever it is can, or how many other professional scan tools have the capability.
