Cool 2001 tahoe click n clunk

Hey everyone, I recently bought a 2001 tahoe and when I put it in reverse it makes a clunk sound but only does it in reverse. Also when you first start the truck and drive it in the first few seconds you hear one click and it's fine after that. I think it could be the u joints my self. I am looking for a second opion or someone who may have had the same problem.

Thanks tahoe4x4guy.

Welcome to AF.
U joints would be the first thing to check.
Check for lose and also feel U joints caps after it has been drove a while.
If one or two is real hot you have a problem there.

Thanks tahoe4x4guy.
on these type of vehicles it is normal to hear /feel a slight clunk when going from neutral to fwd/rev.....

If you hear any tweet/squeek noises, and if as suggested the U joint is heating up the hot U joint is the one in need of replacing..

this too could possibly be related to the rear diff...gear lash...since you just bought it it would be a good thing to replace the rear diff fluid ,,and with the cover removed inspect for wear/shim adjustments if needed..

the other fluid you will want to replace is the transfer case fluid TRAC II ...this is a special blue fluid made for the transfer case... I have found that when the vehicle is stoppped at a light when proceeding to move the vehicle makes a clunk....this is because of the fluid is loosing its lubricity...drive shaft does not slide easily.

Cool Re: 2001 tahoe click n clunk

Thanks for the input. I will be sure to check the u joint. All the fluids have already been replaced ,that is always the first thing i do when I buy used cars or trucks and thanks again for the info.
