89 regal 3.1 fuel pump
The fuel pump was replaced, but no fuel comes out of the tank. With the tank sitting on the ground, add power and no fuel exits. A supposed GM mechanic installed the new pump, I removed and it is new. You can hear the pump working. I was thinking maybe he didnt connect the wiring inside the tank correctly and maybe its pumping backwards. How can I check the inner wiring to make sure its turning in the right direction? Is there a technical schematic to look at? The guy kept the old pump and literature that came with it. Other thoughts?
Thanks guys! |

Re: 89 regal 3.1 fuel pump
Unless he had to rewire the sender, there would be no way to reverse the wires to the pump as the connector will only plug in one way. The car's ECM is set up to give a 2-3 second initial prime, then shut the pump off if no crank sensor signal is received. If there is no fuel coming out during the prime cycle, then either the impeller in the pump is broken (that's why you can here the pump run but nothing comes out) or what you think is the pump running is it humming because it's locked up and not spinning.

Re: 89 regal 3.1 fuel pump
From what I understand, he had to put connectors on the new pump. Maybe he hooked them up incorrectly. There are maybe 2 to 4 connections from the new pump to the upper section inside the tank, maybe it was some kind of universal pump. He didnt rewire the Factory connection under the car, but he did inside the tank. Are there actual pump wiring diagrams for that? Ive always replaced the entire assembly, on this only the lower section is replaced.

Re: 89 regal 3.1 fuel pump
I pulled the pump again and got a better look at it. Dont need a diagram, two wires are for the float and two for the pump. I switched the two pump wires and we have fuel. Put her back together and she purrs like a kitten. The other guy just didnt pay attention to the wire locations.
Thanks for your help. |
