Pre catalytic converter replacement

I have a 1996 SE Automatic with the CEL on. I just found out my Pre catalytic converter (the one in the engine compartment) is bad. Is this part readily available and how much? The dealer wants $900.00 for parts and labor. Is this something I could replace myself? Will it hurt anything to run the car without repair?

Thanks in advance...........

Re: Pre catalytic converter replacement

http://www.car-stuff.com/ Type additional information Around $375.00
Once you click on convertors scroll down until you see the picture. I think you can do it with normal hand tools.
You won't pass a state emission inspection without one.
