1999 Cavalier LS Won't Start - Maybe Alternator?
Please help...my car will start just fine if I haven't used it in a while. But if I go to the store and jump back in the car...it won't start. It won't turn over, no lights come on...nothing. If I jump the car, it will start...or if I wait a really long time, it will start on it's own. Is this the alternator...if so, on average, how much does this cost to fix?
Thanks! |

Re: 1999 Cavalier LS Won't Start - Maybe Alternator?
It might be the alternator. Get the car running and check the voltage coming out at the posts where the wires connect it should be around 13 volts if it is around 11 or less or 15 or more the alternator is foobar. after you shut the car off check the voltage on the battery and then again a little while later to see if it is holding a charge. If your battery is shot and you allow the car to run strictly off of the alternator power you will burn it up.

And also check the cables for corrosion and Tightness. And you can also take it to Autozone and get the battery and alternator checked as posted by Jason/RKBA for free. It`ll Save you the hassle.
