Flasher issue...

'01 Lumina turn signals seem to work intermittently when I use them. Same goes for the hazard. Could the mechanism inside the steering column be warn, loose, or crusted? Would a flasher fuse cause this to happen? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

yes flasher can cause this. i would try new flasher and you have to of them drivers side under dash. thats cheapest way to go before tearing into the colum.

Re: Flasher issue...

See if your brake lights are working right when this happens too...multiswitch could be involved...that's main chokepoint for both circuits, and the brake lights work through it too.

The outboard brake lights won't work when it happens...the high mount is on a separate circuit...

Re: Flasher issue...

It was definitely a flasher issue. I picked up an aftermarket flasher from Advanced Auto and it works fine although the body does not match the OEM flasher. But for now, All is well.

Thanks

i am having this problem also. with my 92 lumina. I picked up a new flasher unit from an autostore but i can not for the life of me find where the origional flasher is. do i need to take out the whole dashboard i pulled out the little plate the trunk release is on. saw a bunch of wires and kept looking for it. people say it is behind the dash but can someone either post a few pix or tell me which bolts where i need to remove to gain access to the unit. also would it make sense that my hazards work and the turn signals dont and when i hold say one of my turn signals on it will blink normally ?

Re: Flasher issue...

some of those flashers you have to stand on your head to get to them under dash. it should be like right at your right knee up under dash. hope this works for you because you should'nt have take dash apart you may even look at auto zone.com and it shos location most of the time.
good luck.

Re: Flasher issue...

Dominicdinada, from now on, it would be best to start your own thread rather than resurrecting one 2 months old that was already resolved even though your issue is similar.

Since you say the turn signals work when you hold the lever down, I'd say the problem is the turn-signal/multifunction switch in the column (very common issue on these cars), not the flasher.

For reference though, the turn signal flasher is mounted on or near the steering column under the dash. Look for a small silver can aboput the diameter of a quarter on the end of a purple and yellow 2-wire harness.
