Higher rpm than normal
My olds acheiva normally is at 2200 rpm at about 70mph but suddenly it is at around 3000rpm. I don't know what is going on but I bet it is expensive to fix
! It seems to be running pretty normal besides this but does anyone know what could be causing this to happen, or if it is worth it to fix?

Re: Higher rpm than normal
Welcome to AF !!
Whats your year make/model and engine size, and how many miles ?? Hard to say exactly but it could be the OD in the transmission isnt kicking in or something, could also be nothing. Might get it scanned with a good scan tool that can read the trans codes.

Re: Higher rpm than normal
My car is a 95 old achieva, 3.1L, 178K miles, automatic transmission with overdrive. I don't know...I think that it is going into overdrive but maybe the torque converter is locking up or not working properly, or maybe some electrical problem. I just hate spending money on a car with such high miles but I guess that is what happens!

Re: Higher rpm than normal
I would have it scanned by a transmission shop!
Might not cost much if anything, then if you get a trouble code post it here and we can see if we can help you out .

Re: Higher rpm than normal
Is the pedal depressed at half way or all the way? If so, it could be downshifting to get the RPMs into the powerband to give you a quicker acceleration - if that's the case it's perfectly normal and doing what it should be. Can you tell if it shifts when this happens or is it the RPMs going higher without any change in shift or pedal movement?
