1990 ranger

GA_googleFillSlot("Forums_ROS_300x250_noad"); let me start off by saying sorry for the grammar and spelling

ok a friend has a 1990 Ranger. he first problem was she let ppl mess with it that did not know what they where doing. they replaced the clutch, presser plate, throw out barren, and slave ciylder. when it was all said and done the frist week it was fine. then you had to put it in 1st or R to get it to move. it wont shift into gear for a dead stop or down shift eather.

its like when you try to shift form last gear to R really fast or for R to a gear it dont work it stops. well that's what it is doing. i have even tried to get it to grind it wont even do that at a dead stop.

we have bled everything thing 4 bottles worth.

any help would be great. we are trying to keep it out of the shop if we can.

Re: 1990 ranger

Just a thought, but have you tried testing/adjusting/replacing the neutral sensing switch? It's what's supposed to stop the engine from starting unless the vehicle is in neutral so it may be the cause of the problem -- but this is just a guess. First figure out what transmission you have so you can locate the switch since the location varies. Then check the wiring to see if the harness is loose or damaged. If it is, it'll have to be replaced or fixed. If everything is fine, you could try replacing it. Depending on where you are the switch is about $30-$40.

If you have to replace, the procedure is as follows for a manual transmission 1990 Ranger.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely with jackstands.
  3. Place the transmission in any position other than N.
  4. Clean the area around the switch, then remove the switch. To install:
  5. Install the switch and tighten 8–12 ft. lbs. (11–16Nm).
  6. Reconnect the harness connector to the switch.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
I may be mistaken as to it being the cause of the problem, but it's a possibility. Since I'm not 100% sure I understand what you're saying, I apologize if I've totally misunderstood the problem. Good luck.
