Re: 95 talon smokes rings or valves how to tell
Is this car turbo?
Smoking due to valves usually is worst at startup (oil has had time to run down the valve stems over night for example) then clears up. Sometimes still smokes lightly on decel. Smoking due to rings can happen all the time. Compression is probably low. Smoking due to turbo can happen all the time. This is fairly easy to check, just pull the intake and the DP and look for excessive oil.

What color smoke? White means water, blue means oil, black means running rich.

Re: 95 talon smokes rings or valves how to tell
I've seen the color thing fail occassionally. Some times it's just too hard to tell. For example, I've seen ridiculously white oil smoke, as well as very black oil smoke. I think it all depends on how much oil is being burned perhaps. But water is always white, and rich is always black, so that much is trustworthy at least.
