idling problem 2

I made a youtube video of my idling problem so tell me if you have an idea of what the problem is. As i say in the video, i think its a vacuum issue but i'd like someone elses word. So here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28XfXlC7zkw

P.S.: i also replaced the fuel filter which was about as old as the car :-) and could that have dis-lodged a piece of debris which might now reside in the carb? I've also replaced the spark plugs. And i bought a new cap and rotor "which probably won't help anything."

Carb clicking sound.... normal. But as for the poor idle, it really sounds to me exactly like a vacuum leak from somewhere. The engine is sucking in too much air and not enough fuel so it has trouble running and the idle lowers down the practically nothing. At the exhaust it soulds like you have a huge cam lol. It could also be the EGR valve stuck open, letting way more exhaust into the intake than there should be at idle (which is none). PCV is also a culprit. To check for vacuum leaks, get a can or two of carb cleaner and spray it everywhere: Carb base, EGR base, all vacuum hose fittings, along the intake/head seam, brake booster, etc. If you notice any change in the idle at all while spraying things, you've found your leak.

Your experience on the video with the econo gauge bears that out. The econo gauge is a vacuum gauge, pure and simple. The lower the vacuum, the closer that needle is to 'POWER' on the scale. The semi-random misfires (the put-put at the exhaust) is a classic sign of a vacuum leak. Check all of your hoses and also check:

*The brake booster

*The cruise control, if equipped

*The line to the transmission, if it's a TH350

*Carburetor to intake gasket

*Loose carburetor bowl body to base

Anything that uses vacuum, i.e. the A/C system, the evap system (canister), etc.

thanks everybody for all the help. i took a good look at all of teh vacuum lines and i gutta say, not a single one was in good condition. In fact, i think they're so old that they all expanded and most of them you could slide off its connection point with ease. The lines that go to the EGR valve were literally disintegrating in my hands. So basically its just one MASSIVE leak. "This would explain why adjusting the idle didn't do anything."

Yeah, my car idles like that too (choppy), but in my case, it really is the cam!

It's actually not THAT bad, and is most noticeable when the engine is cold and running at around 600 RPM. The roller tip rockers still make it sound like a diesel at idle.

It also had a vacuum hose issue when I got it - the issue was that every one was original and no good! I had to replace them all.

P.S... Silicon, j/w, why would roller tipped rockers make the engine sound like a diesel at a cold idle? I never noticed that problem with mine I don't think. Are you running solid lifters in that engine of yours?

No, not solid lifters. I am running the COMP Magnum chromemoly roller tips and they have always made that noise, from day one. It's not loud, it is more of a diesel 'quality' sound. You'd have to hear it run to know what I am talking about.

You should post a video of your car sometime. Like bhw33191 did with the engine running, exhaust, etc... not neccesaraly doing something (*cough* burnout).

lol YEAH i know. i don't think my car is even capable of a burnout with the way its running right now. And i'm scared of depleting the life of my brand new tires. I'll post a REAL burnout video soon but i'll have to put on my old crappy snow tires just to be safe

Ah, the image in my mind right now is priceless! A keyboard! I think the oddest thing I've ever burt out on was a used carpet sample from Home Depot. Then there was also the rail of a railroad track. Not to mention my folder full of school work on the last day of highschool. But a keyboard. An e-machine's keyborard! Can't get much more random than that!

I dunno if anyone saw the "Part deux" of the e-machines vid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Qcfb_43SF4&feature=user I think the "bending without snapping action" in this video was priceless if i do say so myself. I gutta come up with another creative way of destructing things with my car....
