Oil Change

at time for an oil change, is it ok to drain out the dino-oil, and replace with synthetic oil, without doing some kind of flush to the engine ?

only if it does not take oil or leak it somehow.
yes, definitely switch to good synth. i have my cars running: lexus rx300 - 15000 miles and ticking, silverado - 12000 miles on one oil change. amsoil. ford ranger - i drive it just as a spare - i don't even remeber when i had oil changed. was well over a year.
the way i do it is:
1. buy proper weight synth oil and Mobil1 filter(best available)
2. buy cheapest oil proper weight in walmart
3. get her on ramps, drain oil, pour in cheapest oil, run for 15 minutes, with last 5 at about 2000 rpm (this is "oil flush". if you find 0w5 oil somewhere, it's a flush oil designed for flushing)
4. drain, replace filter, refill oil.

silvies takes 6 qrts. i use wide mouth funnel to drain oil, as there's a skid plate right underneath the drain plug, and oil always wants to drip down on it and spread all over the frame. so i just catch it with the funnel and re-route into the pan.
forgot to say: before i change oil, i add a can of seafoam to the cranckcase and drive for about a 1000 miles, so all gunk is flushed out.

if your engine oil is not sludged and you have done your oil changes every 3-4,000mi when hot you most likely will not require any flushing...

I have been using synthetic in engine and transmission on my 2000 silverado 5.3 for many years and this does reduce wear and keeps engine cooler and increases mpg slightly...also less strain on starter in winter...

after you change your oil look for leaks and check oil color if it gets dirty at 1,000mi you will need to replace oil again..


I go 8,000mi on oil changes...replace filter every 4,000mi...almost 120,000mi engine uses 1/3quart every 8,000mi..I use pure one purolator filter pl25288.....cost 6.00 for filter...use mobil 1,, 5-30wt...

you should notice an improvement in starting and also coasting down hills..less friction...when replacing the oil filter you will notice that it is very slippery when compared to the dino oil...

j-cat, make an experiment once. change your oil, drive for 3K miles(why would you even change oil every 3K miles, it's an old myth making quicklube folk reach), drain that oil, then pour flushing oil in, run for 15 min, and drain.
YOU SEE HOW BLACK IT COMES OUT?? brand spanking fresh oil, that was in the engine for only 15 minutes?? and just don't tell me it all came out of filter..... all 4 qrts of it will come out pitch black.
there are MULTIPLE areas in any engine where sludge forms and is NEVER removed during regular oil changes. the only way to get it out is to dissolve it(seafoam driving, as high oil pressure forces seafoam into tight places and flushes dissolved sludge into the mainstream) and flushing with flush oil. costs 6 buicks for seafoam, 6 bucks for supertech gallon of oil in walmart, 15 minutes extra time, and gives heaven of piece of mind.

10w30 & a good filter every 3K for me.cant justify the prices of sinthetics

I believe you somehow misunderstood my vehicle maintenance on oil change...I replace the synthetic oil every 8,ooomi.....I replace the oil filter every 4,000mi....I now have almost 120,000mi....I have not seen any black oil on any of my vehicles at any time the most it gets is darker brown on a white cloth... also I might add I do on occation cut open the oil filters to examine the condition of the engine I suggest that you and others do this periodicly to determine if the engine is good and the filter your using is doing its job and also if you need more frequent oil changes...



on the dino oil...the cost factors with gas prices and the ability to go twice as far on the oil change is in my opinon most definately worth the slightly extra cost of the oil....as I stated before mpg is better starter has less strain especially in winter and if I lived in a hot pheonix climate this oil can take the heat....dino oil vaporizes....


if you look you will see I own a 1984 camaro... the other day I replaced the driver side valve cover 305cu....this vehicle uses dino oil....and to my amazment the top of the head had no sludge anywhere....and that includes the rear head drain back hole area...The trick to this Is what my cousin the engine rebuilder always said was change your oil only when hot and with dino oil every 3,ooomi...the reason I use dino here is because I do not put many miles on this car...I am the original owner ........
