New rebuild won't start
I had the motor and head rebuilt and is all together.
Put a timing light on it and it is good. It tries to start but just wont. Befor I took it apart it had a bad valve and low compression in all cylinders but I could get it started and bairley had enough power to pull it up on a trailer. Do I need to have it diagnosed?

Re: New rebuild won't start
How did you check the timing on an engine that won't start?
We need more info, like what year and engine is your car? Check the basics, such as: is there spark and is there gas spraying out of the injector? If it's a 95 or newer car that has a crankshaft sensor, a loss of that signal will cause it to start just for an instant until you release the key from the start position. A cork oil pan gasket can cause the crankshaft sensor to not work.

Re: New rebuild won't start
It is a 95 and the new pan gasket is not cork. The timing light was hooked up as a friend cranked it over for me, the light would flash on the mark on the pully . And I could adjust the distributor to make it want to start better with a few degreese past 0.
It smells of gas in the carb. And wile cranking it over if I pump the gas pedel it seems to maby flood it or some thing.

Re: New rebuild won't start
Recheck your valve timing. You may have inadvertently retarded the camshaft.

Re: New rebuild won't start
Guess you could check timing without it starting, I wasn't thinking it through. The recommended 5 before timing adjustment should be near the middle of the distributor slot. Rolling the distributor as far as it will go toward the firewall should be somewhere around 15 before. If these readings don't dorrespond to these physical locations, you've got the valve timing wrong.
I used poor wording on the oil pan gasket; ANY oil pan gasket can cause the crankshaft sensor to fail, get rid of it.

Re: New rebuild won't start
Thanks guys got it running now ,just need to find where the antifreeze is leaking from, driping off the front of the cat. converter. The tube with the o-ring is a strange set-up to hook up the radiator to the water pump.
All the hoses look tight, gues I'l have to jack up the car and crawl under it and look.

Re: New rebuild won't start
When I installed a rebuilt, I too was getting coolant dripping from the cat. Turned out to be one of the hoses going into the firewall (heater core). I had bent the soft copper tube taking the hose off. It was leaking when reinstalled, so I ended up using a sealer between the hose and the copper tube. Hasen't leaked again! But it aint every coming off again either....
