Nostalgia Nitro Funny cars

OK, so i had some pics for you guys but my camera was stolen on the way home, but we have finally got the issues worked out of the car since switching to nitro, and ran our best pass ever, 6.49 @ 223mph with a very mild tune up, went out in the first round, but we were very happy because it didnt even melt any pistons, once our 78' corvette body is done, we expect to be in the 6.20's with the same tune up, simply because of weight savings(well over 100lbs) and aerodynamics, some shots of the corvette getting mounted(its really small compared to our 57'

We got some new wheels for the car American racing torque thrust pros for the front and trackstar double beadlocks for the rear wrapped in goodyear rubber

We have 3 booked races left this year, and may even be going to boise, Idaho this year depending on how things go, but look to see some better ET's because we arnt dont yet....

Re: Nostalgia Nitro Funny cars

Very nice!

At Pontiacs In The Park (Virginia Motorsports Park) this year, there were two nostalgia cars doing exhibition runs. They were in the md 6s, but were alcohol, not nitro (I LOVE nitro and was a bit disappointed...). One was a '73 Grand Am and the other was a '79 T/A. Both were hemis similar in appearance and equipment yours shows.

We're nearing the testing stage for our TA/FC. It appears to be the same chassis as yours, but I'm no chassis expert. It's NHRA certified as of Jan, '07 as a TA/FC. It went in the 5.90s with a hemi. The difference now is the car won't have a hemi, but a Pontiac (that's right...). We expect it to be capable of 5.90s, but not right away. As you know, tuning a beast like this requires some "sneaking up". Initial goals are 6.50 and 220. It's got an '02 Camaro body for now, but we're on the lookout for one of the '01-'02 Firebirds.

As you're into the nostalgia cars, no doubt you're aware of Pontiac's perfomances in the nitro cars in the late '60s and early '70s. The last NHRA nitro winner that WASN'T a hemi, was a Pontiac.

Cool stuff! Just wanted to "share". Don't see "real ones" like yours on this site very often!

My name is Jim, and I AM a nitroholic...

Re: Nostalgia Nitro Funny cars

our chassis is basically a one off custom chromemoly built for us in 2000, cert'ed for 5.99 and quicker, we are limiter to a small CI hemi, with a 6-71 a 18%, 21 gallon pump, single points type mag, etc, the rules make it tough to tune, and it can be hard on parts.

Re: Nostalgia Nitro Funny cars

Our car is an S&W chassis, currently certified TA/FC. We're in an "outlaw" group, so no "rules" except safety equipment. 475 CID, Littlefield 14/71, up to 40%, Enderle nitro pump (we'll be running alcohol, so it's overkill) and Buzzard Catcher, Tiger heads (compact wedge, 450-plus CFM), MSD mags, LencoGlide. Watch for "The Drunken Injun", coming to a track near you!

A good friend runs "Good Guys" with a 399 CID Pontiac (FED). He does okay, but can't seem to EVER get the tune right. If he were closer (he's in Arizona, we're in Virginia), we could probably help get him there. Our fuel guy is a bit of a genius...

Stepping into this fuel racing has been a GAS!!! (pun intended) We go to Indy every year for the Nats. Since NHRA has returned to Virginia, we take that one in, too. Nothing like "catchin' a cloud..."

"CH3NO2 Learn it, know it, BURN IT!"

Re: Nostalgia Nitro Funny cars

Update!!

Drunken Injun made noise and smoke yesterday afternoon! Oil pressure good, throttle response, good, fuel system functioned as "normal". We'll be testing soon, so stay tuned!

Re: Nostalgia Nitro Funny cars

YEPPER!! That's "us"!

There's a small post in "Classic Pontiac" section of this forum. "Little" Dave Wilcox is the fuel guy/driver. Joe Roberts is the owner, Scott Roberts is the "coordinator" and general "do everything" guy, Bobby "The Toe" Cacciotti of AllPontiac.com is the head fabricator and "starter guy". His efforts made it a first-class appearance car. Randy Martin (LD's son) is the track crew chief. My responsibilities revolve around design, procuring parts and "clearancing" all the main stuff, as well as valve train. LD does the port work and installed the "extra" head bolts (18 in all, each side).

It takes several people to make a project like this come to pass. I'm proud to be a part of that team! We will test a bit more come Spring. It's possible you will see this car "make" an IHRA TA/FC field in '09. If we can manage that, we'll look at NHRA more seriously. No illusions of granduer here. The Pontiac was the last engine to give Hemi any sh!t at the top level. Now that developement on the Pontiac has resumed after a 25 year "gap", we'll see! Some of those awesome Thompson Hemi heads are still floating around out there! But even if not, we've made some waves and made the Chevy boys look up and say "Who ARE those guys?"

Curious which site you read about us on. Pontiac or FC?

Jim

Re: Nostalgia Nitro Funny cars

Just to update progress...

The car is no longer named "Drunken Injun". The owner was worried he might offend someone... It is now "Dirty Bird", as the body work is complete and the car now LOOKS like a Firebird instead of a Camaro.

We did some more testing at VMP a couple of weeks ago. No new ET numbers. New MPH, though. 209.46, which is the fastest a Pontiac V8 has gone down the 1320 since 1971 (nitro car). So we currently "own" both "ends" of the current Pontiac "records".

We're taking the car to Phoenix for Pontiac Heaven XI next week. It will the first "real" race. We're hoping for some 6.40s over 210. We didn't have any "extra" blower pulleys at VMP to compensate for the bad air, but we have a small collection now! Installed a "high speed lean-out" as well. We're learning...(:-

6 full passes to date, no real issues. The rod bearings look great (pounded a bit, changed them after 3 passes). The mains are showing now wear at all. Valve train is stable, cylinder leakage is minimal. Looks like doing one's "homework" pays off!

Re: Nostalgia Nitro Funny cars

Nobody to race at Pontiac Heaven. Too bad. Car ran flawlessly and picked up over 4 MPH (213.7). Air was bad, track was worse. 60' and 1/8 were "off" by .1 and .15 respectively, yet ET was down a tad (new "record" for a Pontiac, 6.596...) We're on the right "track" and haven't hurt any parts yet! 9 passes, all under 7 seconds and allbut the first "record" run over 200. The three passes at Phoenix were within .005 seconds and 1/2 MPH. The converter is paying off!
