98 Riviera Climate control problem

This morning when I started my Riviera there was a buzzing or whistling noise coming from somewhere near the climate control area. The off button was lit as well as the rear defroster. The temp for the exterior and the interior both had a 1 infront of them...so 80 degrees showed as 180. The A/C is working (off and auto lights are both on) but obviously something is wrong. I turned off the engine and turned the switch to 'accessory' to display the dash lighting and the noise started as soon as the climate control panel light up.
I plan to disconnect the battery tonight to see if a 'reset' will help.
Does anyone know what is causing this.
