2000 Lincoln occasional misfire
HI,
I have a 2000 Lincoln town car. When the engine first starts it runs fine but after it heats up I get a little bit of a bucking (misfire) only after it goes into overdrive and when I backoff the gas peddle. Just letting the car run around 40 MPH. It seems to be only at a certain RPM and under load. If I accelerate it stops. The 'check engine' light is not on. I am in the process of checking each coil. Any ideas? Steve

That doesn't sound like a spark problem.. well some does.. the 'under load' missing sounds spark related, but the 'accelerating it stops' contradicts a spark related problem.
I would go ahead and run the OBD Scanner on it anyway to see if there are any intermittent faults stored in memory. Might be a bad sensor or vacuum line too... check for codes first.

I have seen a bad or slow MAF sensor causing the same type of problem.
Look for non metered Air leaks from the Air cleaner to the Intake. All Air is metered going to the engine and the MAF sensor tells the PCU how Much. The Throttle position sensor (TPS) + Massive Air flow sensor (MAF) sends data to the Power Train control unit (PCU) for fast + SLOW speeds! MCGIVER Last edited by danielsatur; 08-01-2008 at 08:59 PM.

i have a 2001 that did the same thing at around 40mph. took off the air hose to the throttle body and sprayed with cleaner and wiped out. works great, no more skip....be sure to use throttle body cleaner and not carb cleaner. carb cleaner is bad for the throttle body. while ur at it you might as well get a can of mass air flow sensor cleaner and clean it as well.......hope this helps

I have a 99 and I have had this problem twice. The engine would shake like it was not bolted down. Both times it was a bad ignition coil. Each time cost me about $208 to repair, the coil itself costing about $80 (if I remember all that correctly).

I had the same problem just this weekend, except my check engine light came on. It would buck at a certain speed. The mechanic noticed water around the boot. It wasn't coolant but rain water, and the boot was worn.
It was the number 7 cylinder ignition wire. It cost about 300 dollars to fix it. about 90 dollars of that was to diagnose it. I hope this helps. John
