2004 dodge caravan won't start
went to start van next morning and nothing. battery tests fine. starter/selenoid test fine. replaced ignition switch and starter relay. fusible link good. have current (2 incoming) into fuse box but nothing at starter end. someone told me neutral safety switch - but where is it exactly and how do i test that? at wits end on trying to figure out what is wrong with this vehicle (been 4 weeks). dummy lights do come on when i turn the key and "clicking" at relay. HELP

Re: 2004 dodge caravan won't start
You're describing a no rotation issue and not a no start issue correct? If you hear/feel the starter relay clicking, it eliminates everything in the circuit to that point meaning the ignition switch, Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) (you don't have a neutral start switch unless you have a rare manual transmission), ground input from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the starter relay coil, and starter relay are good. Based on what you've said that leaves the primary battery cable from the battery to the starter, and the wire from the starter relay to the starter solenoid contact on the starter. Have you checked their continuity? One more voltage to check at contact 30 (input volts from battery to starter relay contacts) on the starter relay socket. Should see 12vdc all the time.
You say you checked the battery. The true test is a load test. Does jumping the battery using jumper cables make any difference? If it starts, change the battery. I take it to check the starter you jumpered the solenoid contact on the starter to the battery correct? Have you tried wiggling the battery cables as you turn the key? They can corrode and fail internally. Are the engine and chassy ground connections clean and tight? Edit

Re: 2004 dodge caravan won't start
i checked for voltage at the starter relay and had two positive with power coming into relay however i went to the starter(selenoid is part of starter) and the single black wire going in has no voltage (this is the only wire i can see going into the starter - am i missing some others?) i have replaced the ignition switch and the relay.

Re: 2004 dodge caravan won't start
another thing i am not sure i mentioned - the "clicking" is coming from the starter relay not like a louder dead battery click unless it is one in the same.

Re: 2004 dodge caravan won't start
Agree with the load test, I have seen batteries that put out 12.0VDC at rest, but when you crank her the voltage may drop to 9.0 or 10.0. So, definitely do a load test. Voltmeter on battery and have someone try and crank her and see what the voltage reads at that point.

Re: 2004 dodge caravan won't start
Go here to look at the schematic I'm looking at: http://www.oplin.org/databases/proxy...%2fframerq.asp
Takes more than a click to get to it: > type 123456789 and click submitt > scroll to Cincinnati library and click submitt (give it a bit to load) > scroll to ARRC and click > enter your vehicle info on next 3 pages > under repair topics select wiring diagrams > select starting system on two pages > should see the schematic If you draw a line from the top middle of the page straight to the bottom, cutting the diagram in half, the line should cut the starter relay in half. Everything to the left of the line makes the relay work (powers the coil). Everything to the right of the line applies power to the starter. From what you are describing, everything to the left of the line is working. Why? You say the relay is clicking. The click you are hearing is the starter relay coil (left side of relay) closing the starter relay contacts (right side of relay). Power is getting to the relay coil from the ignition switch, the contacts are closing. Problem is power apparently is not flowing through the contacts to power the starter (as you well know). Looking at the schematic can you tell me exactly where you have checked for power and/or continuity? If you are in doubt the starter relay is clicking, put your finger on it and turn the key. You'll feel it. To confirm, remove it and turn the key. Still hear the click?

Re: 2004 dodge caravan won't start
fully charged battery and checked wire from battery to starter for flaws - none - then checked to see if i had juice to starter - yup got that. i looked at wiring diagram no "yellow" wire on that but there is one on the van that plugs onto the bottom of the starter/selenoid that tests negative on juice. is this my problem? if i squeeze the relay i can get starter to crank (i did replace the relay with a new starter relay). i am at wits end and don't know what to look at or do next. i was told that i didn't have a neutral safety switch (unless i had a manual transmission) but why if i call the parts store they list one? if i do/don't have one please verify which. and where the heck is this thing - drivers side? near bottom of engine? toward the grill or toward fire wall?

Re: 2004 dodge caravan won't start
I had sort of the same thing with my 97 voyager. I would try and start it , it would just click once. Tried again it would just click the third time would start . This got to the point where it would take twenty clicks(trying to start it) before it would start. Turned out to be a flat or dead spot on in the starter. Replaced the starter and everything been good ever since.
