80 ss or not???

Hello,
I bought an 80 Elky a few weeks ago. The guy that I bought it from just had it painted and the factory SS stickers/logos were put on it. I asked him if it was a *real* SS and he said he ran the vin and it was. Well, I went here
http://elcaminocentral.com/Necoa/VIV&Trim_Info.htm
but it shows nothing about whether the el camino is an SS or not. So I'm thinking that the vin doesn't even show if the car was an SS and it must be something else.
Can anyone show or tell me how to I.D. a true SS?

Thanks
Darrin

Re: 80 ss or not???

I have a brochere and the only difference it mentions for the ss besides decals is the black quarter window moldings, and "super sport" identification. I've seen very few 80 SS's. I would think the vin would show if it was, but you can just never know.

that said it doesent really matter if its an SS because in all honesty i would'nt think the value would go up that much. G-bodys just arn't worth a lot of money right now. I have a feeling that they will be some day but just not now.

Re: 80 ss or not???

Look in the glove box or at the build sheet for the RPO codes. Z15 is the code that denotes an El Camino SS during that year. Since the SS is a trim package and not a performance, the VIN doesn't show it having a special motor.

I've got a bit of a rare bird myself. I've got a 1987 GMC Caballero "SS" but GMC never officially had an SS model. However, I do have the Z15 sport package, but no decals.

Don't mean to jack this thread, but I have just purchased a 1980 Caballero
Laredo.I was told it was an "A" platform body, but what I'm reading here says "G" Platform body.

Can You help a confused newbie!

Sorry again if I stepped on this thread inappropriately!

Respectfully,

Dinosdad

Re: 80 ss or not???

The A body platform changed dramatically in 78. G.M. continued to use the A body designation through 80. They then changed the A body to G body for the 81 through 87 years. The 78 through 80 cars are technically A bodies but are essentially the same as the later Gbody cars.
