97 voyager front wipers quit

My front wipers have quit working. There was a period of time when I would turn on the switch and nothing would happen for a few kms, then they would just start. Then they would work a few times then again quit. Now they have quit all together. I have checked all the fuses and the relays, had the wiper motor out and it is good. Does anyone have any ideas.

Re: 97 voyager front wipers quit

Sounds like a possible multi-function switch problem.

I agree! Unfortunately they are not the cheapest part to replace!

Are you getting voltage at the wiper motor with the switch on?

RIP. No there is no voltage getting to the wiper motor. I just checked and there is no voltage getting to the switch that is mounted on the steering column.

Re: 97 voyager front wipers quit

The Body Control Module (BCM) appears to control the ground to the wiper on relay coil. It may be the culprit. Short of changing it, there's little testing that can be done by a DIYer. Your local dealership has an advanced scanner they can use to test the system. If you want to do all you can before you make that move, try this:

> Verify the wiper on relay coil is getting power at contacts 86 and 87 on the relay socket
> Either remove the IOD fuse or disconnect the battery for 2-3 minutes to reset the BCM
> Reseat the BCM connector. Inspect for corroded/bent/pushed pins
> Check continuity on all wiring in the system. Do you need a schematic?

When working under the dash disconnect the battery to prevent airbag deployment

Re: 97 voyager front wipers quit

RIP. I do have a schematic and I see where everything go to the BCM, but where would I find it. I have a Haynes Repair manual but I can only find the Power Distribution Center (PDC) which I have already taken out to check all the wires and the connections underneath and everything look fine.Is the BCM something else.

Re: 97 voyager front wipers quit

The BCM is on the back side of the Junction Block. That's Chrysler lingo for the fuse panel under the left side of the dash. If you have the 96-98 Haynes manual #30011 there's a picture and explanation on pgs 12-16, 17.

Re: 97 voyager front wipers quit

RIP, I have found the BCM and all the connections look fine on it. I see this is probably going to be a Dealer thing now and I'm not sure the van is worth that expense any more. Do you know of any reason why I just can't install a new fused line to a new switch that will give me my high and low speeds on the wipers. I would disconnect the connection on the fire wall in the engine compartment so there is no back feed. The van runs good except for this but see does have over 300 thousand km on her. Thank you so much for your help. It is so nice to have support like this.

Re: 97 voyager front wipers quit

Do yourself a $$ favor before you replace a stalk or a BCM and check the relays for the wipers. there are 2 of them one for low speed/intermitent, and one for high speeed. They run about $10 each. I think it's the low/intermitent one that is causing your problem

The relays are located in the electrical control box under the hood on the driver's side. The lid of the box gives you a map/index of which relay is which. They are identical and you can switch them and see if your problem stops. Then go get the one that was bad

I bet it's one of these relays...let us know.

He said he checked them in his first post. Gotta take him at his word.

Can you rig your own switch? Iffy. I would think you could but not sure how the BCM would react to that. Plus the park switch signal goes to the BCM. Without that they won't stop correctly and won't reverse direction. Post a new thread and ask if anyone has done it. I would go with a new BCM first. They can be had from a junkyard for a $100. Maybe less. Just have to make sure you get the exact part number BCM. Beyond that the dealer can test it and let you know if it's bad. Give them a call. It may not cost as much as you think.

I'm lost in the muck. Have you checked continuity of the wires from the relays to the motor?

Re: 97 voyager front wipers quit

RIP. I have aready installed a manual switch. It works great except for the parking issue. Just have to be particular where I stop them. I will check with the dealer and check the cost of diagnostics. I didn't realize that this was something you could get from a wrecker. I will check it out. Thanks
