Remote Start on '97 Cougar

Hey guys,

I have a '97 Cougar XR-7 with the 6V engine.
I have one of those car alarm/remote start systems with the remote control that tells you what your car is doing.
Neat system, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the remote start to work right.
It's been awhile since I looked at it, but I think there are 2 2nd ignition wires on the car and only one out from the remote module. I have tried using just one wire and I tried tieing the two together and still nothing. When I pres the button to start the car, you can hear everything electronic trying to work, but the engine doesn't turn.
So the Acc wire is working right, but the wire for the ignition isn't getting the power it needs (meaning, the relays aren't connected right (meaning, I can't figure it out)).

sounds to me like the starter wire is not fired if all the lights on the dash come on and you have no crank then it is a starter wire problem do not jump ign wires that is not a good idea use a relay

Mike i tried to install a remote starter on my GF car...2000 cougar...i called the techs and they said it may be because of the alarm .. im not sure if ur car has a alarm fastory but they told me to run the starter wire right to the starter instead of to the wires under the dash...i didnt try it just cus i was to Pi$$ed off...but might work with ur car good luck

No factory alarm, but it does have the remote unlock that just about every car has nowadays.
I may try that idea. Thanx!

Did you verify that you have 12v coming out of the remote into the starter wire of the car?

I have a 90 cougar that I wired for remote start keyless entry myself. Had similar problem as you. I don't know about your car but i am not able to start it with the key unless my foot is on the brake pedal because of a safety feature wired to the brake pedal. What I had to do was instead of tapping into the wire at the steering column. I had to tap into it right before it went out through the firewall. Which bypassed the safety switch and allowed my car to start. I beleive the wire was a red wire with a pink stripe. If you're not for sure about the color code. Check the color code of the wire on the solenoid under the hood. They should match. Hope this helps.

Wow, thread from the dead!

I actually got it working over the summer with the help of a guy who used to install these things.
It remote starts and veerything, the problem was that the brake pedal wasn't going all the way to 0 volts when it wasn't pressed, so the remote start was switching off automatically.
I guess the voltage to the taillights should be zero if not pressed, but on mine, they glow very dimly. ...and it olny glows when the car is running so its not the brake switch itself or else they'd glow even without the key in (which would drain my battery).

I thought it might be because I installed LED taillights, but the guy who helped me install them said that shouldn't be it and he even tested that theory to make sure.

Oh well...it works. But the only thing is that if I happen to remote start it, drive home and get there within 5 minutes, if I turn the key to off, the car will continue running. Not a problem as most of my car trips take more than 5 minutes.

Well instead of rigging it the guy that works on remote starts should have used a relay instead to isolate the brake wire from the remote start from being triggered by low voltage. Personally, I think it is the brake switch itself or some weird short problem.
