2004 F 450 Diesel Mileage Questions ??
Thinking about buying a real clean F 450 Flatbed Diesel.
It is real clean. Except the motor needs cleaning. Interior is real clean too What kind of mileage do these diesels get, anyone know ?

Re: 2004 F 450 Diesel Mileage Questions ??
04 was the first full year for the 6.0 peading your load most of the 350s and 450s got around 16mpg with a load (bob cat or similar) and closer to 20 mpg if you keep you foot out of it a lil.
my 05 f350 gets 18 mpg average with a 50/50 of city and highway |

Re: 2004 F 450 Diesel Mileage Questions ??
You don't want it,the 6.0 is a huge pos and the powerstroke gets the worst MPGs.Even Jasper,an engine reman company knows about the 6.0 powerstroke and I have seen the the list of upgrades they do to the 6.0 powerstroke.Jasper does 30 upgrades to the 2004 and 2005 6.0 and here they are: upgraded pistons, turbos, injectors and injector harness and more.

all that is true there where a problem motor but mine has 155k on it and i bought it brand new and the only thing i have had to upgrade where the Turbo at 130k and the injectors at 120k... and thats just normal wear and tear. My truck is worked hard every day with towing my bob cat durring the week and my 53 foot trailer with 3 jeeps on it every weekend... it does just fine for me

Re: 2004 F 450 Diesel Mileage Questions ??
There is a fix to that powerstroke and it costs $16,000.00,a powerstroke to Cummins conversion kit.It can be done and My local Snap On dealer said there is one and a shop he stops at,one of his routes said this to him.The 6.0s do not hold up at all. There was a test done to one and went through 2 blocks, rods through the block. My father has seen a Ford with a Cummins in it,it was an option to the F250s and F350s.Ford needs to do away from the powerstroke and switch to Cummins since Ford owns 51% of Cummins.Ford's contract with International ends next year

Re: 2004 F 450 Diesel Mileage Questions ??
The contract ends in 2010 and the cummins has never been an option in a ford ever. if it was why would there be a contract with international! Not to mention why would anyone have ever bought a 6.0 in the first place! When the contract ends in 2010 the rumor is they are goin to a Cat motor Not a cummins. Ford is smart and they will never put Cummins in their truck bc they are making money on the dodges just as well as the fords. Cat will make us a bad ass motor no worries!

Re: 2004 F 450 Diesel Mileage Questions ??
there was a cummins option in the late 80's. the contract for ford is not with international. it is with navistar. navistar uses the international engine as a base(block and heads). The turbo(s),injectors, engine controls, fuel strategy, emissions controls, cooling system, air intake system, etc.. Navistar builds engines based on specifications from ford.
international engines are good engines. navistar complete engines are junk. As for your gas mileage question, its a solid 13.5 mpg. take it from a ford technician, i have done gas mileage test drives to settle complaints. ford thinks that 13.5mpg is acceptable. Now if you had a 7.3L it would be another story. most of the guys that say they still get good gas mileage are guys that have early model 6.0's and have not had recent f.i.c.m. reprograming |

Re: 2004 F 450 Diesel Mileage Questions ??
Cat is not going to make anymore engine for the big trucks anymore and This what I heard, they do not meet emission standards. My father has seen one with a Cummins under the hood. The Cummins stand up better lasting up to a million miles and I know of one with close to 300,000 miles in a 1992 Dodge that still runs great.

Re: 2004 F 450 Diesel Mileage Questions ??
I have an 03 F350 with the 7.3L PS and I get about 15-16 highway and 13-14 city. It seems to make a big difference if you can keep the RPM's below 2000. I know Dodge's and Chevy's get better mileage but I just like the way Ford builds pickups so I'll pay for the extra fuel.

They didn't nick name the 6.0L 6.Ohno for nothing. But if you get a good one, expect high teens low twenties.

Re: 2004 F 450 Diesel Mileage Questions ??
Plus the exhaust fumes stink,P-u and I know about it.The garage door has to be open at least half an hour.Do not ever let a powerstroke let sitttling idling in park, the powerstroke is not made for idling in park. Also Fords have no resale at all and are very hard to sell.My Uncle Steve had one and engine puked,a 6.0 powerstroke.
