Audi R8 TDI V12 - cosmetic surgery

Hey Everyone,

As you might have noticed, I haven't been recently active in modeling anymore, which to be honest is a shame. I quite enjoy it but haven't got around to making time for it.

Luckily, holidays are there and I have gotten the bugbite back and have been working on something that i quite like.

It's called the audi R8 TDI V12, it's like the evil twin (as in spiderman) of the normal R8. It's been bitten with the oilburning diesel virus and has received all kinds of 'in your face' cosmetics.

Which makes it quite cool to me.

The build itself is made using the Revell kit as a base, using -as always- some primer, putty and card, along with some glue and a healthy stash of exactoblades.

I know that some of the detailing -aficionados won't agree on some choices made on the model (accuracy-wise), but I decided this would be a personal model that tries to LOOK like the real one, so it won't be 100 percent accurate, but accuracy at 100% takes a bit too much time.

Eitherway, I think the front and the sides already look pretty accurate to me and need little details. The rear spoiler has been done too and the rear will be mostly left untouched.

As the pièce de résistance, the engine and the clear roof, that will be taken care of at a later stage, with regards to Brian(veyron) for making me go the extra mile on that one.

Eitherway, enough text, let's see some pictures.

I 'd love to hear what you guys think of it and what could and should or may and might be done differently.

Cheers... good to be back!

Olivier

Good project! Have always dug the R8 TDI since the debut.

Body mods look great, like the side skirts a lot. Whats your plan for under the front headlights?

Re: Audi R8 TDI V12 - cosmetic surgery

Ah, i always like models NOT out of the box!!!

i read the bodywork (in aerodynamic sense) & they all add up logically.
well design! i wonder how it will look if you add a rooftop air duct too!

so it boils down to one question, is this a full detailed one or a curbside?
by means of full detail are the doors, rear cowling & the front bonnet openable?

happy modeling!

Re: Audi R8 TDI V12 - cosmetic surgery

Waow, nice to see this one !

I'm also trying to build a new R8 from this kit, inspired by the V12, but I imagined mine was more as a bi-turbo V8 !
I scratched the turbos, but I don't have enough place to build the engine how I expected to...
So I think I'll only modify the body and do as if there was a bi-turbo V8

Your modifications are quite perfect to me and accurate to the V12 model.
(I have a lot of pics but I guess you too as there aren't too difficult to find...)

What I can suggest to modify is the ugly air intakes of the opening rear hood which are a real grille on the V12 model.
other than that I don't see anything to advice as you already did a great inspired job !

If I understood well you won't modify the rear spoiler ?
Mmm... I think I will on mine, but I don 't like the square-like form of the V12 exhaust ends...
I'll probably try to keep a 4 round ends in a new spoiler.
I also plan to add fog lights in the new front spoiler and the small air intakes but maybe not exactly as the original.

Ok, and I will take a few pics soon to show it, even if I sweared no to open a new thread without being sure to be able to finish it !

Re: Audi R8 TDI V12 - cosmetic surgery

I'm officially jealous

I liked the car in silver, when they repainted red I needed some time to clean up

Will you attempt the wheels?

I've thought about just using some of the details on mine, such as front fascia, skirts, intake...but not get too crazy. I'd be ecstatic if Revell updated the kit to the concept.

Thanks guys!

Erm, under the front headlights I will put the normal slats and close the hole by putting some more 'mesh' behind it.

Thanks Marc, to be honest I 'm not into crazy detail from the inside, so I think it will be a curbside model. I will try to use the correct engine tho(from the LM audi) and cover it so it looks like the real deal. But I don't plan anything opening...

Thanks! I will change the air intakes. Since I will be using new glass on the roof I might aswell do the rear hatch. And for the rear bumper (I think you mean bumper?) I will maybe do some little changes, but that I 'm not sure about yet.

Hey Bob, well according to what I read it's the director of Audi who asked to make it in a more vibrant color, because he thought the silver was too boring!
Who knows, mine might end up yellow.

Sadly, I won't be doing the rims. That's the only thing I haven't found a solution about. If you have any ideas, please shoot!

Very nice! I've been thinking of attempting this myself, but I have too many projects going at the moment to take on another.
Make me proud!

Re: Audi R8 TDI V12 - cosmetic surgery

Here's a small update.

Thanks to the pushy Veyron, I kinda took his advice and did the main pièce de résistance of this car. So i went ahead and tried doing the clear roof on this car.

To be honest it wasn't easy, working with thermoform still holds a lot of misteries for me, but the result is acceptable.

First off, i thinned the inside part of the roof to a certain extent (I bet i could puncture that plastic with a toothpick !!! )

Secondly, i cut out and made the Naca intake on it.

And thirdly I cut out the 'holes' in it.

Then I used the thermoform I did beforehand and cut it to the desired size.

That's about all I have for now. Awaiting probably Micablue paint.

Cheers and don't hesitate to C&C,

Olivier

Impressive work you did on the roof.

This is a promising project. Not much of a fan of the original, but I like the mods your doing.
I wouldn't mind some a step-by-step guide of how you did the roof...

Not simply 'acceptable' like you mentioned, I think this roof modification is fantastic! If I was half that brave...
