1996 626 V6 automatic transaxle problem

About a month ago, I was traveling through some mountainous country and the transmission began to shift differently. I checked the fluid, and it was at the recommended level. The problem persisted, so when I got home I flushed the transmission and replaced the fluid and filter.

However, the problem remains unchanged. It shifts very hard out of first, hard enough to jerk my head back. When it shifts out of fourth, the engine increases its RPMs by about 300-500 and then shifts to OD.

I went to AutoZone to have a diagnostic ran, and the computer showed that the transmission fluid temperature sensor was possibly malfunctioning. I tried to find where this sensor is located, but I have been unsuccessful, and I don't see how that could cause the transmission to shift differently.

Any input is greatly appreciated.
